Think of this world as a tree. All the trunks, branches, sub-branches, leaves, flowers, fruits, the entire grandeur. Now think of you as part of that tree. You may be a leaf on a huge tree. Now wherever you are, whatever the condition, start understanding things and questioning things.... "is this it?" "Is this all that I am?" Slowly, step by step you will reach the roots. No matter where you are, remember that you are always connected to the roots.
Vigyan Bhairav Tantra is a popular book of a trantra which provides 112 ways to reach the roots of the tree. Vigyan Bhairav Tantra verse 72 talks about reaching the roots by eating & drinking. Verse 71 through meeting with loved ones, verse 70 from sexual union, verse 73 by pleasure of sound & music. By extension, pleasure is derived through any of the 5 senses, elements and their "tanmatra". Idea is to be completely absorbed in it. Like in a Love Affair.
This is the place where tantra, vedanta and yoga differ. While vedanta and yoga reject pleasure through senses and believe in renunciation, tantra includes all experiences as part of the union of Shiva & Shakti.
Whatever you may be, tantra suggests to start from there itself. To stand up from the ground, we take support/reaction from the very same ground (as beautifully described in Saundarya Lahari by Adi Shankaracharya). So is tantra. We take base of whatever we have, in whatever conditions we are... to lift ourselves. The idea is not to indulge in actual food, drink, sex or anything, but to invoke the feeling of pleasure that it gives. Stretch this feeling up to a point where actual stuff is not required and the entire environment is created within the most minute details. This feeling is one pointed dharna. Once achieved, the point or bindu is also removed to dissolve for ultimate reunion with Shiva & Shakti.
